Mathew Follows Hurricanes to U.S. Gulf Coast

Louisiana (HDW) October 12, 2004 – Tropical Storm Mathew never reached hurricane status, but it followed Hurricane Ivan as a large storm lashing the Gulf Coast of the United States. Mathew has been degraded to Tropical Depression status by the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and since it made landfall in Louisiana over the weekend, the storm has started to break up. The picture displayed above from a NASA satellite shows Tropical Storm Mathew as it hit Louisiana and the Gulf States on Sunday.

The threat from flooding and rain associated with the remnants of Tropical Depression Mathew are now greatly diminished. The low that was once Mathew I now about 25 miles southeast of El Dorado, Arkansas with wind gusts approaching 25 miles per hour. Mathew is moving at 17 miles per hour to the north and northwest, and is expected to continue to drift through Arkansas. Mathew should continue to weaken, with rain fall amounts in the 1 to 2 inches range.
